“ Suffering has not made me noble, it has released my inner bitch, so don’t expect another earnest account about the spiritual delights of dying”
Lindy Jones, a former English teacher, makes it clear from the beginning that battling with a terminal diagnosis (motor neurone disease) is never going to be easy, particularly when you are a hypochondriac whose cries of “I’m not well” have finally come true.
As muscles start to lose their strength and she loses the ability to talk and eat we see her descend into self-pity, despair and temperamental outbursts. Always the drama queen, the role of ‘tragic heroine’ is one she can now fully embrace and excel in.
Recounted with self-deprecating humour, and with Scrappy the Rescue Dog by her side, she writes about her experiences living life in the strange new world of serious illness whilst exploring her previous one as an energetic teacher and healthy person.
